Somebody Is Importing Snakes and Spiders Into Nigeria And We Don’t Get It

So, we know Nigeria imports really funny things.

I mean, Nigeria imports toothpick so we’re not really surprised. But when we read that people were importing live reptiles into the country, we were genuinely surprised.

According to Punch, three consignments containing 140 species of snakes and 600 other animals were intercepted in Calabar from Cameroon.

The other animals which were identified as geckos, millipedes, hairy frogs and spiders, were said to be worth about N6.9m and heading to Lagos.

Now when you come to think about it, what does someone want to use three consignments of reptiles to do

Keep thinking, we’re waiting

Even if you’re using them to make bags like these or eating them, shouldn’t they be dead first?

Nigerian custom laws prohibit that live animals should be brought into the country.

And so these animals according to the officer in charge of the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services in Cross River State, Mr. Sunday Ukut would be properly scrutinised after which they might be destroyed.

And in the words of the custom controller for Calabar Free Trade Zone – Cross River and Akwa Ibom commands

We have enough snakes around Nigeria already.

Well said to be honest.
