Expert identifies areas of ICT opportunities in Nigeria Software development, cloud computing services, e-development and call centre development have been identified as areas of opportunities in Nigeria’s Information Communication Technology, ICT, sector. An expert in the hi-tech industry Mr Basil Patel made the observation at a lecture orgainsed by the Nigerian Academy of Engineering in Lagos, south-west Nigeria. He stressed the need to roll out fibre backbone network to other parts of Nigeria to foster development. “There is a concentration of the Fibre backbone network in the west and we need to roll it out to east north-east south-east and so on. “Deployment of National connectivity, connecting not just urban but sub-urban to rural areas is critical,” Mr Patel said. He pointed out that the Nigerian government on its part should put in place policies that would help investments in the ICT sector flourish. Refocusing planning The president of the Academy, Dr Edet Amana, noted that there was need for the Nigerian government to change its planning technique. “We must change our focus our mind set and begin to address our planning using technology as the base. Technology based focus in planning is now being used by China and India to build themselves into super powers,” he said. The lecture was organised by the Nigerian Academy of Engineering to promote excellence and advance the growth and development of science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) in Nigeria.
